linguistic anthropology lab

@ucsd

Since 2006, the Lab’s facilities have enabled the development of a wide variety of work on language, culture and society, with particular emphasis on the multimodal analysis of human interaction. The Lab is home to both individual and collaborative activities, from transcription and data coding at its digital workstations, to its longstanding Linguistic Anthropology Workshop, which includes formal talks, discussion of works-in-progress, and data sessions. The Lab offers:

  • four PC workstations equipped with 2TB harddrives, Nvidia video cards, 32” or 27” HD monitors, and the full Adobe suite for audio and video editing
  • video capture equipment for check-out by Anthropology students (two HD video cameras and one DSL camera with video lens)
  • a dedicated large-capacity server for storing and sharing high-quality digital materials
  • projection and sound facilities for classes and group discussions
  • lockable individual storage

Besides the Workshop, the Lab occasionally holds hands-on workshops on software programs such as atlas.ti, MAXQDA or NVivo. It is open on an informal basis to all Anthropology students wishing to bring their field materials into a language-centered space. More broadly, the Lab and its equipment are available to students interested in exploring multimedia formats for presenting their research.
